Morning Breath

Posted by Anisa Meier

So you are in the first stage of the relationship, you know about the whole "they-only-know-the-best-part-of-me" phase... it was your first time to spend the night and ahhhhh the glorious first morning. Your partner rolls over but you got scared to death that you covered your mouth and ran to the bathroom! I'm really not talking about personal experience here... well maybe I am! Don't you hate it that of all the things in the world, your stinky morning breath always ruin moments like this?

Morning breath is inevitable; I think every breathing human being has had a share of this whole hubbub. We always see it in movies, lovers wake up and the first thing they do is kiss, even worst with tongue! That horrifies me a bit but I really don’t want to ruin the romance for y’all. Bad breath is one of the most embarrassing things to have and if you ask me, whenever I am not so sure about the quality of my breath, I avoid talking the moment I wake up let alone give my partner a big smooch. I always pray that I wake up before he does and then I find myself rushing to the bathroom to brush and gargle.

We all know that morning breath is caused by the mouth being dry for a long period of time. Dry mouth obviously occurs when there is a decreased saliva flow during sleep. This promotes a dry, oxygen-depleted environment inside the mouth and this is where the bacteria which produce the chemical compounds that cause bad breath love to thrive. So…..is there a way to control this fated situation?

If you are too concerned about morning breath, there are a couple of things you can do to make sure your breath does not smell like rotten cabbage when you wake up in the morning.

Is morning breath a deal breaker for you?

How to Prevent Morning Breath

1.) Avoid foods that leave a pungent taste and smell in the mouth or those that are known to aggravate breath problems such as garlic, onions and cheese. I remember one time I had a burger with a lot of onions and my breath and burp smelled horrible for two days. If you eat a lot of garlic, try to keep it at a minimum. For example, instead of choosing garlic-flavored potato chips or dip, go for sea salt flavor instead.

2.) Nothing will ever replace maintaining good dental hygiene. Make sure you brush at least twice a day for two minutes. I know, that is such a long time when you’re brushing but it’s all worth it in the end, trust me! Been there! Once you develop that habit, you will never brush for less than two minutes again.

One cause of morning breath is food particles left in your mouth so if you do not floss and brush regularly, get ready to pester your partner every morning.

3.) Make it a habit to brush or scrape your tongue. A tongue cleaner or tongue scraper does this job really well. Some of the bacteria reside on the tongue and most food particles are left there. So if you haven’t brush your tongue in years, imagine all that nasty goodness inside your mouth. Boy you’re in for a treat!

4.) Use a mouthwash that does not list alcohol as its main ingredient. I am not a huge fan of OTC mouthwashes because they do nothing but mask the smell for a couple of minutes. Don’t believe everything you see in the commercials.

Always opt for a mouthwash that is intended for bad breath such as Dr. Katz TheraBreath Oral Rinse. It is an oxygenating mouthwash that helps neutralize sulfur-producing bacteria. It effectively stops morning breath and food odor. This is also great for people with dry, sticky mouth.

5.) Have a dental checkup every six months or so depending on your needs. I think this is a no-brainer and there’s no need to explain it further.
