Causes for Halitosis You Need To Be Aware Of

Posted by Adem Litwin

We already know that there are certain foods/beverages that can cause your breath to smell horrible. More often than not, this is just temporary. You can always floss, brush your teeth for at least two minutes and you’re done, you can kiss that awful smell goodbye! If you can't brush your teeth right away, you can always chew on a gum. Not just any gum though, make sure it is sugar-free with Xylitol

So what are the other causes of bad breath?

Poor Dental Hygiene

I know you’ve heard about this over and over but it’s TRUE! Poor dental hygiene is one of the notorious bad breath causes. In fact, 80 to 90% of bad breath cases originate in the mouth. All those nights that you are too lazy to brush your teeth and all those years of not flossing will eventually backfire and lead to bad breath.   If you fail to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, food particles can loiter in your mouth. Bacteria will love you for this!

Imagine the growth of bacteria in between teeth, around the gums and on the tongue. This is a sure way of making your breath stink.   Bad breath is mostly caused by volatile sulfur compounds in the mouth. These are produced by the bacterial growth inside the mouth. As simple as it gets, not brushing will make the food particles in your mouth rot and this will cause bacteria to grow, once bacteria grows, VSCs are produced causing your breath to smell awful.

Post-Nasal Drip

You may not be aware of this but any abnormal activity in the nose is one of the most common causes for halitosis. The thick mucus discharge that is produced from colds, allergies, certain medications, hormonal changes or pregnancy can collect on the back of the tongue. This layer of mucus serves as a protective blanket under which bacteria live. It is also known that bacteria can break down proteins in the mucus creating Volatile Sulfur Compounds.

What can you do about this? You can use an OTC nasal spray that will thin out post-nasal drip. This will effectively lessen the odor-causing bacteria thriving onto the surface of the tonsils. Another thing you can do is getting yourself well hydrated. This will make the mucus less gluey which will less likely to collect on the back of the tongue.

Tooth Decay or Cavities

Active infections in the mouth like abscessed teeth or a partially erupted wisdom tooth can be causes of bad breath as well. If you go on with untreated decay, this can trap enough debris and bacteria that they become the source of foul odors. The smell coming from a decayed tooth is really bad that people cover their noses blatantly in front of that person.

The best way to find out if you have any cavities or decaying tooth is going to the dentist. The procedure is done by 1.) removal of the decayed portion of the tooth 2.) rebuilding the missing tooth structure with a filling material.

After the filling, it is very common for the tooth to be sensitive to cold food or beverages. This can last for up to two days. In general, the deeper the filling, the more likely the tooth will be in a prolonged sensitivity. You should be completely comfortable within two weeks. If the discomfort goes way beyond two weeks, you need to go back to your dentist as there may be a void under the filling or your tooth has an infected pulp and you need to undergo root canal therapy.

Dentures

Whether we’re referring to complete dentures, full dentures or partial dentures, they have a big influence on the quality of someone’s breath. To establish if your dentures are the culprit for your dragon breath 1.) Remove your dentures and place them in a baggie 2.) Seal the baggie shut and wait for 5 minutes 3.) Open the baggie and take a whiff (I know this is kinda’ gross but I did not say put your nose inside the baggie and inhale all the smelly goodness in there). Now you have an idea how your breath smells like to others.

While it is true that one of the most common bad breath causes is the buildup of bacteria on the tongue and around the teeth, bacteria can also accumulate on the surface of the dentures and this is obviously the source of awful breath for some people. This occurs when dentures are not cleaned properly. It’s needless to say that you have to spend some time cleaning your dentures by brushing them correctly and by using a good denture cleaner.
